Oil Painting Supply Guide
PREPARING PAINT SURFACES
When working with oil paint, be aware that the slowdrying oils can seep into and deteriorate unprepared surfaces. Commercial oil papers are treated with a barrier that allows oil paints to stay on the surface while absorbing water and solvents. If you’re not working on oil paper, surfaces need to be prepared by priming, which is coating a surface with water-based paint (gesso or acrylic) to seal and protect it.
BASIC OIL PAINTING SUPPLIES
Oils can be purchased in student and artist or professional grade. Artist grade oils are more expensive because they contain more pigment, offering better opacity and color coverage. Student grade paints generally have less pigment and more oil in composition.
PAINT COLORS & MIXING
When gathering your own working set of paints, you’ll need at least the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue), along with white and black for tinting and shading (lightening or darkening). The list includes additional colors I find useful for general mixing ease and for creating specific vibrant hues.
Basic Painting Techniques
In this exercise, you’ll combine painting and brushstroke techniques to form an abstract, expressive painting. For this project, I worked on a primed canvas board. Techniques covered in this exercise are as follows:
• Blending
• Alla prima
• Glazing
• Scumbling
• Impasto
• Varnishing
PLEIN-AIR DRAWING TIPS
If you’re struggling while sketching your composition, take a quick photo of the scene as a reference. If you’re used to working from photos, live drawing can feel awkward at first, but you’ll learn with practice. Observational drawing is a great skill to hone. You can practice by tracing distant objects with your eyes or finger in the air.
ELEVATING SCENES
You’ve built your knowledge of atmospheric perspective, layering green tones, adding suggestive detail, glazing translucent hues, and building scenic beauty. Now that you have these skills, let’s depict some of nature’s most beautiful elements in this elevated scene.
